About Pensieve Expanse
Pensieve Expanse is the open learning programme of Pensieve Labs. We write free courses that teach one useful skill at a time, in English simple enough to read on a phone, on a slow connection, with nobody sitting next to you to explain it.

What Pensieve Expanse is
Pensieve Labs is a small team working in India. Pensieve Expanse is the part of that work which is open to anyone. Everything we publish here is a course: a set of short lessons, in order, that take you from knowing nothing about a subject to being able to use it.
Right now there is one course, AI for Everyone. It has 64 lessons in 9 modules, and it teaches you to use AI tools well: how to ask a good question, how to spot a wrong answer, how to use them for study, work and daily life, and how to stay safe.
Each lesson is an ordinary web page. There is no video to buffer, no file to download, and no app to install. We are not a university, we do not run an exam, and we do not hand out a degree. What we teach is a skill you can use the same day you read it.
Why the lessons are written the way they are
Most material about new technology is written for people who already understand it. We started from the opposite end. Four decisions come out of that, and they shape every lesson.
Plain English, no jargon
Short sentences. Common words. When a technical word cannot be avoided, the lesson explains it the first time and then keeps using it, so you learn the real word instead of a made-up one. If you can read a class 8 textbook, you can read these lessons.
Short lessons
A lesson takes about 9 minutes to read. That is small enough to finish in one sitting, on a bus, or between other work. Finishing something is what makes a learner come back, so the lessons are cut to a size you can finish.
A practice task in every lesson
Reading about a skill is not the same as having it. Every one of the 64 lessons ends with a task you do yourself, on your own phone, with your own question. Most take a few minutes.
Honest about what the technology gets wrong
AI tools make confident mistakes. A whole module of the first course is about that: why it happens, how to catch it in seconds, and when using AI is simply the wrong choice. We would rather you trust these tools less and check them more.
Who these courses are for
We write for one reader in particular: someone who has passed class 8, whose first language is not English, who is using a low-cost Android phone, and who may not have used a website like this one before. Every choice on this site, from the size of the text to the length of a lesson, is made for that reader.
You do not need a computer. You do not need to know anything about technology. You do not need to pay for a faster plan. If you already build software for a living, you will find these lessons slow, and that is on purpose. They are not written for you.
How the courses are free, and what that means
There is no fee to start and no fee later. No subscription, no trial that turns into a bill, no charge for a certificate, and no locked bundle you have to buy. We do not ask for a payment method anywhere on this site, because there is nothing to pay for.
The first 5 lessons of a course are open to everyone. To read the rest, you sign in, and signing in is also free. It exists for two reasons only: it lets us remember which lessons you have finished so your progress follows you to another phone, and it tells us roughly who the courses are reaching so we can write better ones. It is not a step towards charging you.
We show no advertisements. We do not sell learner data, and we do not share it with anyone who wants to market to you. The privacy policy says exactly what we collect and why, in the same plain English as the lessons.
Pensieve Labs pays for the hosting. If that ever becomes something we cannot carry, we will say so on this page first. We will not quietly start charging for lessons you have already begun.
What is coming next
Three things are in progress. We are not putting dates on them, because a missed date is worse than no date.
- More courses in the same shape, on subjects that lead to work or to further study.
- Lessons in Indian languages. Every lesson already records the language it is written in and which lesson it is a translation of, so a Hindi version can sit beside the English one rather than replacing it. None are published yet.
- A proper way for a parent or guardian to give consent for a reader under 18. Until that is built, the position is the one described under children in the privacy policy: a reader under 18 should use the courses together with a parent or guardian.

A lesson that confused you, a mistake you found, a subject you want us to cover, or a request to delete your account: one address handles all of it. Write to expanse@pensievelabs.org. A person reads it.
